Why is Windows Display Scaling So Bad?

Have you ever noticed how Windows can make things look blurry and improperly sized, especially if you’re using multiple monitors? Why is this?

  • I just turn it all off. Every time. Sure, I'll sit here and struggle with my monitor being 3840×2160 and everything shown looking like it was designed for ants. IT IS FINE.

  • They haven't caught up with the Modern age when people use 4K Gaming, multiple Displays, & Gigabite Internet?

    What?

I've been using Multi-Monitors since like Windows XP? If not earlier? Like Windows 3.1 or Windows 98?

It has only been up to current in today's market of 2019 that I felt Monitors started to get a bit pricy, o_@

& honestly, I don't want my Picture too look big & bulky no matter what Resolution I use…

I want chars to look normal, & thin, not big & fat, that's why I want higher Resolutions, ~_~
I want my Icons small, I don't want 5 Icons to take up half my desktop, ~_~

I do agree though, I think Windows is setup wrong with Scalling…

I think Windows should Scale things Separately, oO

    Text, Apps, Icons, & others…

Icons should have large, medium, small, & custom…
Text should have Custom & some form of way to clean up how it looks on screen…
Apps. should be in the form of Resolution, & such whatever Editing in the Games are…

These should be separate from each other, not all in the same Category, ~_~

  • hey wassup can someone solve this problem: i have a second monitor but when i do a custom resolution it only goes on my primary monitor

  • GNU/Linux is also lagging behind these HiDPI Monitors, too bad… 🙁 Bear in mind that the Linux distro's has several kind of frameworks and DE's like Gnome, KDE, MATE, Cinnamon, XFCE, .. GTK3+ for example scales already quite well, where as GTK 2 is not supporting high DPI resolutions at all, this is an issue since quite some software apps are actually built around GTK2 still.

  • I recently upgraded my main monitor to 4K while my secondary remains 1080p. I'm still on Win7 so I'm having a cunt of a time. The best I can do is open a browser window on my small monitor and manually adjust the scale in that window alone so the text isn't enormous. Which means I can only use the second monitor for my browser but that's okay I guess.

  • dude, I am fairly new at this cs programming and design development, say 4-6 months..Since, last fall…and after passing over some truly good themes and framework layout and design software packages, I just now figured out that my problem all along was not necessarily the 3rd party programming I was looking to partner with and utilize, but rather, my optimal pixelation about my hardware display. Although, as u said, perhaps, the programmers should play a little catch-up and plan for this, it basically boils down to a pack of standardization..Which, I now can truly see is the label by which most all of the complication about C. S. and design can be attributed. Sure, learning the mastery of all of the componentry and variables, including the exact details of one specific programming language, would indeed be quite difficult. Meanwhile, considering the variety of hardware, software written format using any choice of languages, and also, the inclusion of open source contribution, in all, lends to an impossibly overwhelming challenge to overcome. For me, it is simply what makes the science of computers so difficult and discouraging and could benefit by having some degree of unified oversight or governance standards to somewhat standardize the science. In my example, whereafter 100s of hours of painstaking learning, design, troubleshoot-repeat over again and a time, may have been thoroughly recommend reduced and advancing my learning, understanding and development objective. I should not have to engage the field, even though independent and without the benefit of understudy, mentoring, or peer support-except utilizing the vast web resource; still yet, to have engaged the field with such a mad obsession and determination while still only in this moment realizing my greatest barrier specifically was due to compatibility between hardware display pixelation and the configurations set out within the theme programs and related software packages. What is more troubling is how my CMS platform did not indicate any problem with that as the platform software displayed absolutely perfect and does so in spite of any choice of configurations upon my behalf. The problems are only revealed using any particular choice in theme or applicative software model, including: plugin packages, framework and layout design instrument, and others similarly. I started to take notice that this could be my issue whenever I noticed how theme templates offer various page layouts such as wide vs block vs grid vs full width. I even started to see some optimal themes dedicate some configuration options regarding display width. Then, recently having to utilize Gutenberg blocks in WordPress, I understood from also, trial and error, that a huge difference in layout templating was between flex and block grid based design templating. I was having an issue with the flex design in terms of the application of inserting columns and how when using flex-full width, and also relative to having a blank page or sidebar template, the insertion of a section block or column block would simply span the entire scope of the page height, even the aspect of the page located below and off screen display. configuring my template theme back to a grid base block package certified the problem, and allowed me to govern the block-columnn size, and also revealing "white" space unnacounted for by my block sections, sidebar, header, footer, toolbar, and my background and borders. The white space existed because my hardware pixelation out contrasted the theme design template consideration. All of which, problems are now solved by adjusting my hardware display. I had adjusted once before without fully understanding what was going on and upon questioning one particular designer, he simply backed his design and was not fully aware of the scope of the problem. I told him what I now understand to be the resolve to the issue and that is: Since sizing is fundamental to any aspect of design wether one is designing a house, tool, software, or any other application, it seems plausible and expected to have to consider options to manage such settings related to sizing. It should be considered making the first aspects of design. The hardware componentry should match the software and the user should be able to configure settings to match accordingly. First, software should explicily broadcast it's ideal sizing for its layouts, and then perhaps, offer specific adjustments to coordinate the sizes. If this is unmanageable, at least by broadcasting, the user could look for alternatives to suit the theme or layout sizing parameters such as adjusting the hardware componentry display to match the software. Sizing is fundamental and should be at the forefront in planning and building software for use among such a broad scope of users implanting a multitude of open source software and any combination of tooling of choice by the engineer or general user. So, that the experience developing or user engagement is optimized. I am using WordPress and as of now, the minimal dark theme and am seeing signs that I will be abke to complete my design for public accessible hosting sometime soon, after months of dealing with sizing variability. A couple of themes that did try to deal with the issue of sizing was Oceanwp and the Virtue theme. While both could be nearly fitted without hardware adjustments, they fell from my application due to other conflicts about my design, but did anticipate a size configuration in thier options for design. Anyway, thanks for this video…It cleared up many things for me…with respect..TruloveLiaison

  • Windows multiple display support is bad as a whole. It's 2019 and they still haven't caught on the fact that people use more than 2 displays. Even in windows 10 you have options like 'switch to second display', which completely ignores the problem. That and ghost windows on non-existant screens – how are these a thing.
