  • Fire hazards, longevity, concept, etc. There are some others out there, that are building at least some cooler solutions. Downsides are usually higher prices, less exposure because they have limited marketing power/money, etc.
    There is a reason, that a "sonnen" is expensive but still finds more professional contractors for elecrification projects in germany, america and australia, e.g.
    Problem is, that fanboys are short sighted and we would really need to dig deep into all the features, etc. to make some decent estimations. Usually comments end with a fanboy saying: They have more capacity and noone discharges the big powerwall 22 twice or more per day (which isnt true). Take inverters that usually do 2.5kw per hour on a single phase and from then get expensive, you cannot cycle quickly anyways. The concepts of sonnen goes with totally different approaches and thoughts behind their concepts.
    What we fundamentally forget with the elecrification, that we all, especially the us with bad household connection to the grid, will collapse in a street with just a few more teslas. So, the solar + power storage thing is neccessary, BUT it should be smartly figured out, how to do it. The thought processes are usually in one of these corners and noone sums up, what it is all about and why a sonnen battery system is twice the price of a powerwall that even has 3-4 times the capacity. But there is a reason, why they use NO li ion batteries for fire hazards, cycles, etc. I am digging into as well and it is horrific, how onesided Elon Musk fanboys see the whole thing. We already have solar roofs and powerwalls setting homes on fire….yet still noone educates properly 🙂

  • literally still cannot even buy one of these things without jumping through hoops….why even announce it if you're not going to put a price on it and sell it

    gen 2 cant possibly be worse than gen 1, slap a 10k price tag on there and see who bites

  • I would like to see this video updated either with the PW2 or in 2019/2020 with the PW3. The PW2 is price competitive in islanded power (think Hawaii or Puerto Rico) and is close to California. Here in AZ, we are still too low in power prices to turn this into a no-brainer.

  • PowerPACK2(larger more efficient version) 400$/kilowatthour. Lets assume a kWh is 10 cents, a bit high but easy math.
    The pack would have to produce 4000kWh. Yes batteries don't make power I know. The battery would have to make use of 4000kWh that would either go wasted or produced at a less beneficial time of the day.

    Now, time shifting happens once a day. Its cheap at night or off peak times and expensive during morning (water heaters-cooking) afternoon i hot places (AC) and when you get home (cooking).

    There is only 1 significant peak and minimum, there are not any 2ndary maximums that can be utilized.

    Now the minimum and maximum last for approx 1hr so the input/output rates shouldn't matter too much, you'll get the majority of the savings on the min/max hours. However there is a diminishing return. The existing plants only make "so much" cheap power and there is only "so much" demand at the peak pricing daily. Any additional capacity would take a loss on both ends in that they would have to pay more to charge and get less for selling at near peaks.

    However, at best you may be able to buy power off peak for 33% of peak (selling it for 300% input) once a day.
    Saying the average power is 10cents to fixed cost customers, it may be 5 cents off peak 15 cents peak?
    You stand to make 10 cents per kWh moved.
    Thats about a best case scenario.

    You can now begin the process of moving 4000kWh per kWh of storage to pay your battery off.
    11 Years.

    While this number may not include inverter costs, site and construction costs etc, ignore the reality that you will not be getting 10 cents per kwh arbitrage every day of the year. It is promising.

    An 11 year return is 6.5%, a bit higher than most bonds, and energy prices are only expected to rise, battery costs are only expected to fall, and energy demand is obviously going to rise.

    Alot of power companies will likely begin to install large scale arrays of these, especially as battery costs come down 1-2% yearly, as its already cheaper than their inefficient oil burning backup plants, provides other value in that they can rapidly discharge for plant emergencies etc and stabilize the grid.

    At best they will help to improve grid efficiency and push back the building of new plants by some companies who need more peak power in the short term. In a few years when their ROI is competitive enough to justify itself off a discharge per week+ they can be used to entirely replace peak power plants allowing the labor+maintenance+fuel+site costs to be avoided by the utility.

    There is a reason the first few total grids tesla built have abysmal ROI's due to the islands having 4,5,6+ days of storage.
    One was running on diesel and it seems that they'd be better off going with 1 day of storage and keeping the diesel around as its already paid off and installed for the 5 days a year its needed and saving 4 days of energy storage that goes totally unused.

    Until then, for the 1% of time that there is a 1+ day long overcast and the 1 day of storage runs out customer will obviously demand that there be a back up, and that backup is a gas/coal fired fossil fuel plant.

    The math here is best case scenario so I'd wager the utility companies are not stupid, and have run the costs on installation and the return is in the 4% range, below what they make already meaning that beyond extreme peak shifting, testing, or grid stabilization they are not yet profitable for mainland large scale grid applications. Maybe by 2025.

  • the power wall with dams, I live in Switzerland and we have huge dams, during the night we massively pump water and we turbine it during the peak hours…

  • Wow…This video has baaad info…Just the using car battery as a storage medium is not a good idea…..Try draining the car battery down to 20%. IT will damage the battery!!! tesla powerwall on the other hand can get it down that low.
